Exploring the Different Types of Pictures and Art Frames

April 20, 2022

We value the art and photos we take and want to admire them as much as possible. To do this, we use framing to accentuate these visuals and magnify the appeal of their location. Exploring the different types of pictures and art frames will give us an idea of the many stylizations to make our images look as great as possible.

Easel Back Frames

This frame is usually more petite, with an easel back behind it to prop it up. These frames allow you to incorporate your memorable moments in your living and workspaces, allowing you to surround yourself with the joyous moments and people in your life. There are many ways to integrate easel back frames into your spaces. They tend to have smaller groupings of similar subject matter, creating an island of reflection, while spacing specific images around your everyday areas will remind you of those good times.

Gallery

Gallery framing is a framing where the art piece builds up and floats over matting or glass. This style creates an ethereal aspect to visualize what you will frame, commonly referred to as a float.

This style has multiple mats of varying mediums and substrates chosen to accentuate the aesthetic of the imagery or with glazing (glass or acrylics) if you want the artwork to look as if it is floating in space. This style is a great way to combine traditional elements with a modern application.

Shadow Box Framing

This type of framing is different from most other framing styles, with a deep-set frame giving art, photos, or items a unique display that utilizes dimension and space combined with the angle of lighting. Custom shadow box framing allows one to display items that would not fit within the boundaries of conventional frames. In the case of some works of art, draw the observer within the confines of the display to better isolate the art piece and evoke a bigger emotional response.

Canvas Floater Frames (Silhouette Frames)

There are several ways to curate your paintings and artwork on canvas. First, you would need to determine if your artwork is stretched to stretcher bars or mounted to board; some images are even applied directly to other substrates.

The framing methods will vary considerably for these, but a beautiful look for most would be the floater or silhouette framing style. This style employs a floating method of mounting the art piece within the boundaries of a chosen frame finish and style to make it appear as if it were “floating” there.

There are many creative ideas to utilize for framing your art and pictures. Luckily, many frames will give you options to create, so look for the right frame that ties your room together.
